Storytime Science Festival

Fancy some free live art and science this weekend?

From 10 – 4 this Saturday, Home Live Art’s popular Science Alternative Village Fete (AVF) is happening at Royal Holloway University in Egham. I helped out last year as a volunteer and it was a brilliant day for kids and adults, with tons of interesting interactive art to get involved in.

This year under the theme of ‘Storytime Science’, Home Live Art has another fantastic
programme of artists who will merge art and science together as part of Royal Holloway’s Science Festival. The festival aims to inspire new ways to help kids love science by exploring places we don’t usually associate with science, like robots, Harry Potter, sea monsters and superheroes!

Home Live Art’s AVF will be exploring science creatively though interactive art, with stalls of artists combining technology with craft workshops; asking us to imagine sci-fi visions of the future and the universe; and experiments into psycho-kineses and our emotional reactions. A series of guest posts from artists performing at the festival are already on Home Live Art’s blog if you fancy a sneak peak!

Most of the artists’ projects are inspired by popular children’s stories including Matilda, Where The Wild Things Are, Hey Little Ant, Noggin and the Moon Mouse (later The Clangers), and WALL-E – while some artists’ projects will you encourage you to create your own stories.

Despite the Science Alternative Village Fete being designed for children, I’m really looking forward to seeing Brian Lobel‘s project Schmug after seeing his moving performance of PURGE at Latitude Festival last summer; Janey Moffat‘s stop motion puppet making and filming workshop; and Richard Dedomenici‘s tongue-in-cheek Anti-CARD CLASH wallet making workshop, to thwart Oyster and contactless bank cards from ‘card clashing’!

The event will be bizarre, creative and most of all fun for anyone who’s already (or not yet) a science lover! I’ll be working as a Production Assistant and collecting feedback about the event, so please come along and say hi!

Home Live Art‘s Science Alternative Village Fete take place from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 1st March 2014 in The Founder’s Dining Hall at Royal Holloway University, Egham. Entry is free.
